From zero to bright and sunny in mere seconds.
The initial AMG iteration of the latest CLE-Class made its debut towards the end of 2023, and it’s now ready to be showcased further. Behold the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 Cabriolet, which merges 443 horsepower with a convertible top for scenic drives.
The source of that power is derived from the identical turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine utilized in the hardtop version. Equipped with the same overboost function, it temporarily increases peak torque to 443 pound-feet. This pinnacle is more like a sustained plateau, delivering a consistent push from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. Power is transferred to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox, propelling all four corners with the 4Matic system. The convertible model exhibits slightly slower acceleration than its hardtop counterpart, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Despite this, the electronically capped top speed of 155 mph remains unchanged.
In terms of appearance, the CLE53 Cabriolet has similar body enhancements as the coupe. It is slightly wider in both the front and rear compared to the regular model, resulting in AMG-specific fenders. The front features a sporty fascia with a Panamericana grille, while at the back, there are distinctive quad oval exhaust finishers. Inside, AMG upgrades consist of unique displays for the 12.3-inch driver and 11.9-inch center screens, along with branded seats. Optional upgraded AMG Performance seats offer enhanced bolsters for a more aggressive look.
The additional reinforcement could be quite useful. The CLE53 features a strengthened chassis to assist with the absence of its roof, and comes standard with AMG Ride Control suspension. Rear-axle steering is also included as standard, allowing the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels by up to 2.5 degrees when below 60 mph. Beyond that speed, the rear wheels can turn parallel to the front wheels by as much as 0.7 degrees. Mercedes claims that this feature enhances directional stability at higher speeds.
Similar to the current CLE-Class Cabriolet, the AMG model also offers the Airscarf and Aircap systems to ensure the driver and front-seat passenger stay cozy. In the CLE53 variant, the Airscarf feature blows heated air onto the necks of individuals seated in the front. Utilizing deflectors on the windshield and rear headrests, Aircap redirects air over the exposed roof, reducing turbulence when driving with the top down. The convertible top is made of fabric and can be operated at speeds of up to 37 mph, opening and closing in about 20 seconds.
The cost of the 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLE53 Cabriolet will be revealed at a future time. However, we do know that the CLE 450 in its highest trim level has a starting price of $77,600. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the AMG CLE53 will have an MSRP higher than that.
