Addition of Battery-Powered Wagons in Europe’s Lineup
Volkswagen has recently unveiled the ID.7 Tourer, a wagon variant of the ID.7 liftback sedan set to debut in North America later this year. This highly-anticipated release has also brought with it crucial specifications for the European version, including details on technology, battery capacity, and driving range.
The ID.7 Tourer marks Volkswagen’s initial foray into the world of electric wagons, joining a select few battery-powered estates in Europe such as the recently refreshed Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo that is not available in the US. It serves as the electric version of the modern Passat wagon that debuted in 2019, but sadly, it will also not be crossing the Atlantic.
The ID.7 Tourer takes inspiration from its sedan counterpart, incorporating many of the same design features in a spacious wagon-style body. This includes state-of-the-art matrix LED lighting, complete with eye-catching startup animations, as well as sleek full-width LED strips and glowing emblems. While the exact size of the wheels is not disclosed by the manufacturer, they bear a striking resemblance to the 20-inch rims found on the sedan model.
Volkswagen did not disclose the exact battery capacities for the ID.7 Tourer, but the sedan model comes in two options: 77 kWh and 86 kWh. The bigger battery in the wagon provides a range of up to 426 miles according to WLTP standards, thanks to its superior aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.24, slightly lower than the liftback’s 0.23 Cd.
The ID.7 Tourer has the ability to charge at an impressive 200 kW using its larger battery, allowing it to reach 10-80% capacity in just under half an hour when connected to a compatible DC fast charger.
Volkswagen (VW) has not yet disclosed information about the electric motor that will power the ID.7 Tourer. However, it is expected to utilize the same rear-axle-mounted motor found in the sedan model, which boasts an impressive 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. This motor will be paired with a two-stage single-speed transmission.
The interior space of the ID.7 Tourer is a standout feature for this wagon. Even compared to other vehicles in its class, the ID.7 sedan’s trunk space of 18.8 cubic feet is already impressive, but the Tourer takes it a step further with a spacious 19.2 ft3. With the rear seats folded down, the maximum capacity expands even more to a generous 60.5 ft3.
The spacious interior of the ID.7 Tourer is enhanced by VW’s top-of-the-line technological features to provide luxurious comfort. The vehicle’s ventilation system is conveniently controlled by small motors, while its ergoActive seats boast an innovative pressure-point massage capability and automatic air conditioning that rival the best seats in the automotive market.
In addition to the seats, the ID.7 Tourer also boasts intelligent glass technology for its panoramic sunroof. This advanced feature allows the layers of glass on the roof to switch from opaque to transparent with just a touch of a button.
Volkswagen has recently launched a revolutionary Wellness In-Car application, providing users with the ability to adjust vehicle functions using three preset options: Fresh Up, Calm Down, and Power Break. According to the company, these features aim to promote the overall health and comfort of passengers by offering control over background lighting, sound, air conditioning, smart glass functionality, seat air flow, and seat massages. Additionally, the app gives access to managing matrix LED lights and the infotainment screen.
Finally, just like its sedan counterpart, the ID.7 Tourer is equipped with an enhanced reality (ER) head-up display in place of a traditional instrument panel.
The ID.7 Tourer is set to be manufactured at the Emden facility alongside the ID.7 fastback. Regrettably, the United States will not have access to the elongated roof variation.
