Lamborghini Showcases Classic Models on I.C.E. in St. Moritz

Lamborghini has withstood the test of time and remains a prominent presence for over six decades. Its illustrious history is as impressive as the timeless vehicles that have contributed to its identity as both a brand and corporation. In a recent event, Lamborghini unveiled two iconic models from an Italian museum, showcasing them on the frozen lake in St. Moritz, Switzerland, at the third installment of The I.C.E. (International Concours of Elegance). The name I.C.E. holds a dual significance, symbolizing not only the event itself but also the exhilarating experience of these vintage cars racing through the frigid terrain of Switzerland.

Lamborghini Polo Storico, a department aimed at maintaining the rich history of the House of the Raging Bull and its classic vehicles, recently showcased two cars from the Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The 400 GT 2+2 from 1968 and the Jarama GTS from 1973 were not only exhibited at The I.C.E., but also took to the frozen lake for a drive. These iconic cars, both powered by the renowned 4.0-liter V-12 engine, represented distinct yet connected eras.

Two of the many standout vehicles showcased at The I.C.E. were the 1968 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 and the 1973 Jarama GTS. This highly esteemed event was held on a frozen lake, making it an unparalleled concept in the realm of concours d’élégance. The participating cars gracefully paraded across the icy terrain, a feat that could only be accomplished during this special time of year.

Unveiled at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the 400 GT made its debut as Lamborghini’s first official 2+2 model with a seating capacity of four. This stylish vehicle surpassed its predecessor, the 350 GT, in terms of space and comfort, making it an ideal choice for long drives. The highly acclaimed V12 engine of Lamborghini, in its most refined form, powered the 400 GT with a four-liter capacity and an impressive output of 320 hp at 6,500 rpm. The car was equipped with Lamborghini’s signature gearbox and differential, along with upgraded rear suspension to accommodate the increased horsepower.

The debut of the 400 GT 2+2 marked a milestone for the fledgling Italian car manufacturer, which had only been in business for three years. Despite its young age, founder Ferruccio Lamborghini had successfully fulfilled his ambition to produce the ultimate grand tourer. In fact, in October 1966, American Road & Track magazine declared the 400 GT as “the finest GT we’ve ever had the pleasure of evaluating.”

Currently on display at the Automobili Lamborghini Museum is the 400 GT 2+2, which was originally delivered to St. Moritz in March of 1968. The car features a unique Grigio Saint Vincent exterior and a rich tobacco-brown interior. However, this model was eventually replaced by Lamborghini with the Islero.

At the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini proudly introduced its Jarama GT model equipped with a powerful V12 engine. This new addition to the lineup replaced the Islero and maintained its predecessor’s mechanical features while sporting a contemporary design with sharp, geometric edges. One of its distinctive features was the retractable eyelids that concealed the headlights when not in operation.

In 1972, the Jarama GTS was unveiled, boasting a similar engine as its predecessor but with an increased power output of 365 hp. This model also sported a raised air intake on the hood, air intakes on the front fenders, and newly styled Campagnolo wheel rims. However, production of the Jarama GTS ceased in 1975, without any plans for a successor, having only produced a total of 327 models.

Currently under the ownership of Automobili Lamborghini, the 1973 Jarama GTS that is currently showcased in St. Moritz was initially purchased in Sicily when it was brand new. It maintains its original specifications, with a striking Blu Tahiti facade and an inviting mustard-yellow interior. During its display at The I.C.E., this Jarama GTS was equipped with winter essentials such as a ski rack, skis, and a toboggan. Although it may not receive the recognition it deserves as a classic, the Jarama remains a timeless symbol of excellence.

Lamborghini is a brand of Italian supercar famous for its sleek design and high performance. It was founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who was initially an entrepreneur in the tractor business. However, after he had a dispute with Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari cars, over the quality of their sports cars, he decided to enter the sports car market himself. The first Lamborghini car was the 350 GT, which was introduced in 1964. Since then, the brand has produced numerous iconic models like the Miura, Diablo, Gallardo, and Aventador.Renowned for its exquisite design and unmatched speed, Lamborghini is an esteemed manufacturer of Italian supercars. In 1963, it was established by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who had previously been involved in the production of tractors. However, a disagreement with Enzo Ferrari, the creator of Ferrari vehicles, regarding the performance of their sports cars led Lamborghini to venture into the realm of luxury sports cars.
