Mercedes Surrenders, Switches from Four-Cylinder to V-8 in CLE63 Model

The highly anticipated Mercedes-AMG CLE63 will be arriving soon. Initially expected to feature the 671-horsepower four-cylinder hybrid engine from the C63, a recent report from Autocar indicates that Mercedes-Benz has changed its plans. It seems that the high-performance four-cylinder option is being replaced with a powerful V-8 engine instead.

According to “senior officials” at Mercedes-Benz, the upcoming CLE63 is said to be equipped with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine paired with mild-hybrid technology, potentially generating up to 585 hp. This would represent a decrease of around 100 hp from the initial target. The possibility of a plug-in hybrid system being in the works remains uncertain, although test vehicles featuring charging ports have been observed. Additionally, there have been sightings of a prototype emitting minimal noise, indicating that Mercedes is indeed testing electrified models in real-world conditions, possibly incorporating the mentioned four-cylinder configuration.

Therefore, the decision to upgrade to V-8 power may have been made late in response to public backlash against the high-performance four-cylinder engine. Autocar reported this, noting that overall sales of the C-Class in Europe have been sluggish. In the United States, C-Class sales have dipped slightly in the first quarter of 2024, demonstrating a three percent decrease compared to the previous year.

The latest C63 models have recently arrived at dealerships in the UK. While pricing for the US was revealed in mid-April, the cars have not yet been released for sale. Mercedes has faced criticism for removing the V-8 engine from the C63, but without sales data, it’s unclear if customers actually prefer the new four-cylinder hybrid, at least in the US. We reached out to Mercedes for further details and confirmation of the report, however, the company chose not to provide a comment.

If Autocar’s information is correct, the CLE63 is set to be positioned higher than the CLE53, with its powerful 443-hp twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. However, it will not match the power of the C63. More details are expected to be revealed later this year when the CLE63 is officially unveiled.
