Ram ProMaster EV Unveiled: 162-Mile Range, 268 HP, and Advanced Tech Features

Is the Ford E-Transit facing a threat?

Ram, which is owned by Stellantis, has recently released a new addition to its lineup – the ProMaster EV. This all-electric commercial van will directly compete with similar models such as the Ford E-Transit and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter. This launch comes nearly two years after the initial announcement of the 2023 ProMaster. With the ProMaster EV, Ram is joining the growing trend towards electric vehicles in the commercial sector. The van offers businesses an eco-friendly and efficient option for their transportation needs. It boasts a range of features and capabilities that make it a strong contender in this market. The ProMaster EV is powered by an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. This combination allows it to travel up to 150 miles on a single charge, making it a suitable choice for daily work operations. It also has a payload capacity of up to 4,680 pounds, which is comparable to the traditional gas-powered ProMaster. In terms of performance, the ProMaster EV has a top speed of 62 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 10 seconds. This makes it a swift and agile option for city driving and quick deliveries. Its regenerative braking system helps to maximize electric power usage and improve overall efficiency

There are two different models that will be presented: the ProMaster EV delivery model is currently open for ordering (with a more advanced cargo version expected to launch in the future). Based on the traditional gas-powered ProMaster, this electric vehicle has been modified specifically for electrification. The unified body design efficiently integrates a 110 kWh battery pack, resulting in a higher estimated driving range compared to certain competitors. Let’s examine this electrified hauler in more detail.

The source of power is generated by an electric drive unit, producing a robust output of 268 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque, which is directed solely to the front wheels. While Ram has not disclosed specific performance metrics, the vehicle is expected to have sufficient agility for handling delivery tasks.

The focus is on the distance that can be covered. Ram is aiming for a range of 162 miles when driving in urban areas, which surpasses the Ford E-Transit’s meager maximum range of 126 miles. The ProMaster EV offers several options for Level 3 DC fast charging, with buyers having the choice of 50 kW, 85 kW, 125 kW, and 150 kW. An 11 kW Level 2 wall box charger is also available for purchase.

In terms of design, it would be difficult to differentiate this vehicle as an electric van due to its highly conventional front grille. Nonetheless, the blue badging on the rear serves as a signal for observers.

The battery unit has been cleverly hidden underneath the flooring and placed prominently in the middle of the car to improve its weight distribution. It is worth mentioning that the storage area features a level surface, making it effortless for users to load and unload their belongings.

The ProMaster EV commercial van boasts a maximum payload capacity of 3,020 lbs, while its delivery counterpart is limited to 2,030 lbs. The delivery version comes with a 159-inch wheelbase and an extra-tall roof. In total, there will be five different configurations to choose from, including two types of roofs, cargo lengths, and body styles. Potential buyers can opt for either a 12-foot or a 13.5-foot cargo space.

According to Ram, the ProMaster, which runs on battery power, boasts “best-in-class” features. These include a generous 524 ft3 of packing capacity and an impressive interior cargo height of 86 inches. The cargo width is also noteworthy at 75.6 inches. Additionally, the sidewalls are lauded as having the “most vertically oriented” design in its class, allowing for optimal utilization of space.

Apart from its spacious cargo capacity, Ram has equipped the ProMaster with numerous other features to enhance the driving experience. One of these is the Ram Telematics system, which utilizes vehicle location and driving data to boost efficiency and preserve fuel. It also encourages safer driving practices while providing immediate diagnostics for the vehicle.

The ProMaster EV is equipped with a Telematics Module as part of its standard features. This advanced technology controls approximately 50 functions, including 4G Wi-Fi and the ability to receive over-the-air updates. One unique feature that stands out is the last-mile navigation system, which allows the driver to receive walking directions from the vehicle to their designated delivery location. This convenient tool can be accessed through the Uconnect smartphone app, making it easier for delivery drivers to reach challenging destinations efficiently.

The ProMaster EV delivery van also gains an advantage from an optional anodized aluminum roll-up door located at the back, adding convenience for loading and unloading of goods.

Although geared towards commercial use, the ProMaster EV has numerous convenient features that meet expectations. The vehicle comes equipped with a variety of driver assists such as Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning, Crosswind Assist, post-collision braking, Drowsiness Detection, and LED headlights. Additionally, it also includes a rear backup camera and push-button start for added convenience.

As a choice, purchasers have the option to choose a heated steering wheel, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and front parking sensors. According to Ram, customers expressed a desire for enhanced visibility in their spacious vans, prompting the company to provide a digital rearview mirror and 360-degree surround view camera on all models, including the recently introduced electric variant.

The ProMaster EV comes equipped with exclusive additions, such as a charging station finder and an EV Dynamic Trip Prediction mechanism.

As a matter of course, Ucoonect 5 is the norm. The display screen, which measures 10.1 inches, has a split-screen capability and can be tailored to suit the driver’s preferences. With five distinct user profiles, it is well-suited for fleet usage. Furthermore, drivers can stay entertained during delivery trips through their access to Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, they can take advantage of the available Alexa In-Vehicle Assistant, which permits them to remotely lock and unlock the doors, as well as use other functions. And as an added convenience, a wireless device charger is provided.

Ram has not yet released details on the cost or release date, but as mentioned previously, the ordering process for the delivery model is now open (the cargo van will be ready for delivery in 2025). It is likely that the pricing will be similar to the E-Transit, which currently starts at a base MSRP of $49,995 for the cargo van. This launch of the ProMaster EV is significant as it marks only the third electric vehicle from Stellantis to be available in the US, following the recent debut of the Fiat 500e and the Ram 1500 REV. However, there are more electric options expected to become available in the future.

Look out for a forthcoming statement with additional information in the upcoming weeks.
