Unique 2CV Features Twin Engines

Factory-Sold Car Equipped with Two Independent Engines Enabling FWD, RWD, and AWD Capabilities

If we had to select a single car that could accurately represent the essence of European motoring, it would undoubtedly be the Citroën 2CV. However, this is not your typical version of the affordable and charming “deux chevaux” (French for “two horses”). It is, in fact, the little-known 4×4 Sahara model, of which a mere 693 units were ever produced.

Describing it as a mere all-wheel-drive variant of the 2CV would be an understatement, as this unique vehicle was equipped with two engines that functioned separately. This innovative design allowed drivers to switch between front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive depending on their preference. The Late Brake Show’s Jonny Smith was given the chance to test out a meticulously restored version of this elusive model, and let me tell you, it was quite an experience. The fully restored car boasted the classic 2CV look, with its quirky exterior and compact size. However, upon closer inspection, one could notice the added complexity of the dual-engine setup. The front engine powered the front wheels, while the rear engine powered the rear wheels. This meant that the car had double the power, making it capable of some impressive feats. As Jonny took the car for a spin, he soon discovered the benefits of having the option to choose between different drive modes. In front-wheel drive, the car felt light and nimble, perfect for navigating through tight corners. Switching to rear-wheel drive provided a more dynamic driving experience, with better traction and acceleration. And when it came to all-wheel drive, well, let’s just say it was a whole new level of excitement. The

The affordable off-road vehicle that is available from the manufacturer comes equipped with two different engine choices and two gearboxes. It also boasts a reinforced chassis and stronger suspension arms, specifically designed to withstand challenging terrain. The French designers added durable tubular bumpers and equipped it with dual fuel tanks, supplying both the front and rear-mounted engines. Despite carrying a full tank of gas, this 2CV 4×4 maintains a lightweight feel at only 735 kilograms (1,620 pounds).

The initial process is incredibly simple as there are a total of two keys for the ignition – one for each engine. The key near the steering column activates the front engine, while the key on the exterior starts up the rear engine. This specific 2CV boasts two matching 425-cc, horizontally-opposed engines, each generating 13.5 horsepower and 19.53 pound-feet (26.48 Newton-meters) of torque. When both engines are in motion, the vehicle can reach a max speed of approximately 60 mph (almost 100 km/h).

Due to the positioning of the two fuel tanks below the seats, there are openings in the doors to allow for the insertion of the gas pump. In addition, there is a distinct lever utilized by the driver to synchronize the two gearboxes. Citroën was required to make numerous adjustments to the body in order to accommodate the updated machinery, resulting in a more unconventional appearance for the 2CV.

The wheel wells are crafted with varying cuts and the back fenders feature slits to provide ventilation for the motor. Additionally, it boasts unique taillights bordering the necessary cooling fan for the added engine. As for its front end, the 4×4 Sahara sports a remodeled hood that includes a notch for the spare tire.

With little sound insulation present while being surrounded by twin engines, the vehicle is understandably noisy. Additionally, its cost was a major concern, being twice as expensive as a standard 2CV. Consequently, it failed to gain popularity in the market and was more of a trial run than a profitable venture.

Want to know the value of these coveted vehicles? One of them was recently sold at an auction by Bonhams for a whopping €86,250 in late 2019. Similarly, Gooding & Company oversaw the sale of another car for $106,400 at their Pebble Beach event in the same year. RM Sotheby’s also had success with a highly-desired 2CV in 2019, netting a price of €74,750 at their Villa Erba auction.

  1. Many thanks for your post. I’d prefer to write my opinion that the expense of car insurance varies from one insurance policy to another, for the reason that there are so many different issues which contribute to the overall cost. As an example, the make and model of the motor vehicle will have a large bearing on the price. A reliable outdated family automobile will have an inexpensive premium than the usual flashy sports vehicle.
