First Spin in Jaw-Dropping 1,400-HP Car Before Hill Climb
Pikes Peak is a trial for seasoned veterans, let alone novices with almost no expertise in swift pavement competition cars. Consequently, when it was proclaimed that 16-year-old Lia Block would drive her dad’s 1,400-horsepower Hoonipigasus Porsche 911 in the ascent for this year’s hillrise tribute pass, it was figured she would be mild.
No, she didn’t. She acted as if nothing was wrong and moved on with her life, disregarding what had happened. No acknowledgment or recognition of the issue was made by her; she acted like everything was alright. Her attitude suggested that she would not acknowledge it and wanted to forget about it entirely.
A contemporary Hoonigan video recounts the narrative of Ken Block’s daughter completing the precipitous journey to the heavens he commenced in 2022, and we’ll make this plain from the start: if you’re watching this, bringing a tissue box might not be such a bad idea. This 48-minute short documentary touches at some sentimental chords, and it’s not necessary to be an enthusiast of Block’s to appreciate the emotions. To observe everyone being so overwhelmed when Lia passes the finishing line is truly moving. However, you most likely didn’t open this content for tears. You basically want to watch this intrepid young woman demonstrating unbelievable mastery over her powerfully fueled Porsche.
In the video, she gives us a glimpse into the world of motorsport, introducing her car just two days before she takes it for a practice run up Pikes Peak. At an undisclosed track in Colorado, she rolls out of the pits and onto the drag strip and promptly shifts through the gears under full throttle, hitting 130 mph. Those on-site were clearly impressed by her enthusiasm and she sums it up perfectly: “Give me a fast car, I’m going to go fast in it.”
On the following day, there were a couple more training laps at a different track prior to the journey to Pikes Peak. After two additional drill runs on the uphill of Pikes Peak, Block had advanced from having completely no expertise in her Hoonipigasus on the 12.4-mile course to running an aired memorial climb to the summit. Draw attention to that moment when you witness her go from bottom to apex in the video footage.
We get a wide range of footage on board, including POV shots driving from behind the wheel. An impressive rush between two turns to points the dashboard speedometer to 109 mph, and though it may sound cliche, there is no way one could reach these speeds up Pikes Peak without some real knack. It wasn’t a competitive run and she was going on the safe side, yet still, it’s an impressive do for someone’s first prefaces in both the vehicle and the track. No surprise that she is now crowned as the 2023 American Rally Association O2WD National Champion!
“The feeling of being in that car is incomparable,” Block remarked in the video. “It’s like nothing else matters when you’re behind the wheel. It’s a thrill, sure, but it’s also dangerous – that’s just part of the fun.”
